Bringing Hope and Support to Our Community

UCKG Apukeskus Food Bank: Bringing Hope and Support to Our Community

On 8th February 2025, UCKG Apukeskus Suomi Ry hosted another Food Bank event, reaffirming our commitment to supporting those in need within the Helsinki community. From 11 AM to 2 PM, our doors were open to welcome 83 individuals, offering them not only essential food and clothing but also warmth, dignity, and a sense of belonging. The event, held at our headquarters in Pohjois-Haaga (Kaupintie 13, 00440 Helsinki), was made possible thanks to generous donations from grocery stores, church members, and local businesses. Over 300 kg of non-perishable food was distributed, alongside fresh vegetables and meat provided by local shops on the day. Additionally, winter clothing was made available to those in need, a much-appreciated resource given the harsh Finnish winter.

More Than Just Food – A Community of Care

While food and clothing were essential, the impact of the Food Bank extended far beyond material aid. The event created an atmosphere of respect and care, ensuring that every visitor felt valued. One participant shared how she hesitated before coming, fearing judgment. However, she was quickly reassured upon arrival when she was warmly greeted at the door. Another visitor, who had attended food distribution points elsewhere, praised the welcoming atmosphere at UCKG Apukeskus, emphasizing how different it felt to be treated with kindness rather than as an afterthought.

A small but meaningful addition was our coffee table with biscuits, where guests could sit and enjoy a moment of comfort. A visitor expressed gratitude for this, noting that many food aid initiatives focus solely on distribution, often making recipients feel rushed. Here, however, they were given time to pause, connect, and be acknowledged.

Volunteers – The Heart of Our Mission

This event would not have been possible without the dedication of 11 volunteers, who gave their time and effort to make sure everything ran smoothly. From organizing donations and distributing food and clothing to welcoming attendees with warmth and respect, our volunteers embodied the spirit of community and compassion

A Vision for the Future – But We Need Your Help

The success of this event and the overwhelming need in our community have reinforced our desire to expand the Food Bank from a monthly initiative to a weekly one. We have the passion, the people, and the willingness—but right now, we lack the resources to make this happen.

To grow this initiative, we need more food donations, additional support from local businesses to sustain our efforts. If you or your business would like to partner with us in making this vision a reality, we would love to hear from you!

Together, we can make a lasting impact in our local community— because no one should have to wonder where their next meal will come from.
